Freeview has announced a new brand – Freeview Play – for its internet-connected TV services.

Freeview Play will be launching later this year and will be the umbrella name used to describe all of the non-subscription TV services – such as iPlayer, ITV Player and 4oD. Just like YouView, viewers will be able to scroll backwards in time through their electronic programme guide and access on-demand shows.

There will also be an “apps page” – it remains unclear as to whether this will be expanded to support other services (such as Netflix) too.

It also remains unclear whether existing connected Freeview boxes will be able to access the new platform through a software upgrade or if you’ll need a new box. We’ve reached out to Freeview to find out.

We’ll let you know when the first Freeview Play stuff launches.
