In its first week on sale, Destiny Twitch streams have been viewed nearly 20 million times, with fans watching almost 240 million minutes of gameplay.

“To date, Destiny is the biggest console game launch of the year on Twitch,” said Twitch marketing vice-president Matthew DiPietro.

“Our passionate community of broadcasters attracted more than five million unique viewers in the first week.”

David Dague, the community manager at game developer Bungie, said: “Our community has always blown us away with their desire to share, entertain, and inspire. Watching them broadcast their Destiny experiences on Twitch – from the Tower to the Crucible to the Vault of Glass Raid – has been nothing short of amazing.

“We’re humbled by the enthusiasm and we hope our community knows we’re watching and laughing and applauding back home at the studio.”

Destiny was released on September 9 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4.

According to distributor Activision, Destiny’s release represented the “biggest new video game franchise launch in history”.

GfK Chart-Track confirmed that Destiny is the biggest new franchise launch in the UK – beating the previous record set by Watch Dogs, which was released in May.
