“The iPad is a massive iPhone.”
That’s what all the naysayers said when Apple first revealed their tablet device last Spring. And in many respects, they were right, thanks to the slate’s focus on apps and the App Store. Except, of course, for the fact that the iPad and iPad 2 can’t be used to make phone calls.
That’s no longer the case though for those who have fearlessly/foolishly jailbroken their iPads. Developers over at iPhoneIslam have developed the PhoneIt-iPad app/hack that allows users to make phone calls and send and receive text messages on iPads with 3G connectivity.
You’ll need a regular 3G SIM, as opposed to the data-only cards that normally ship with iPads, so you might need to get your scissors out and cut up an old SIM card, or nick your iPhone 4’s one to make this work. You’ll also need jailbroken iOS software, as well as the $20 it costs to buy the app from the Cydia app store. And, while you’re at it, a headset unless you want to look like a complete moron when talking into a 10 inch phone while on the bus.
