dixons-games.JPGHighstreet retailers Dixons are bolstering their online store by opening up a new PC game download section, snappily titled the Dixons Games Digital Download Centre.

To mark the launch, Dixons are offering the first 10,000 users to sign up with the service a choice of two packs of four PC games, absolutely free.

The first option is called the Action Pack, which includes Medieval II: Total War Gold Edition, Condemned: Criminal Origins, Alpha Protocol and The Club. The second pack is the Sonic-themed family pack, which includes Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, SEGA MegaDrive Collection 1 UK and the original Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sure, they’re hardly brand-spanking new releases, but Medieval II: Total War Gold Edition is certainly worth a play, while the James Bond inspired RPG Alpha Protocol is better than the majority of its middling reviews would have you believe.

As for the store itself, it’s still very much early days, and as such isn’t quite up to the standards of the likes of Steam. There are few AAA titles available at the moment, and the ones that are up there are priced quite ridiculously. Call of Duty: Black Ops for instance costs a whopping £60.09. You do get Witcher 2 for a fiver less than it’s RRP though, which is good news for those looking to tap into the much-anticipated RPG sequel this weekend.
