O2 have just announced that they will be exclusively carrying the Dell Streak Android tablet. It will initially only be available from O2 stores in early June, and then direct from Dell shortly afterwards.

With a form factor somewhere between a smartphone and a tablet PC, the 5 inch touch-screen device has access to the wealth of Android apps available through Google’s open OS. There’s also built in Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity, a 5MP autofocus camera with dual LED flash and expandable storage space up to 32GB with microSD cards, all running on a 1GHZ Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

Running Android 2.1, the Dell Streak will be upgradeable to 2.2 once the update rolls out fully.

What sets the Dell Streak apart though is that it can also be used as a phone, hence the O2 tie-in and their promise of as-yet-unannounced competitive tarrifs.

“The Dell Streak hits the sweet spot between traditional smartphones and larger-screen tablets,” said Ron Garriques, president, Dell Communication Solutions Group. “Its unique size provides people new ways to enjoy, connect, and navigate their lives.”

Enough to turn your interest away from Apple’s iPad? It’s certainly more pocket friendly and the ability to make calls is quite the bonus too. Only time will tell whether it can match the “wow” factor of Apple’s tablet though.
