skysports_i.jpgThe new football season finally gets serious this weekend with the opening games in the Barclays Premiership. It is a season that won’t end until July 11th 2009 in South Africa when John terry lifts the World Cup.

Football and mobiles are made for each other, whether it is receiving updates of the latest scores or sending taunting texts to a friend whose team has just gone down 7-1 in their opening game.

So no surprise then that there is a raft of new-ish iPhone app targeted at footy fans. The newest one might just be the best. Sky Sports Live Football Centre has pretty much all your need to keep in touch including live scores, text commentary, player profiles and even live images from the games.

You can also customise it so scores from key games are just a touch away. The app is getting rave reviews on iTunes with the only serious criticism that it is lacking the option to push scores to an iPhone. Maybe next time.

Five other cool footy apps.

iFooty Plus £1.19

This has been around for a while, and is available in a free version and this updated option which retails for £1.19. The key difference is that this version includes live scores, news and updates but has a push option too, so you get a goal alert each time your team bangs one in. The free version also has ads too. It has a big following and has attracted lots of rave reviews.

Kick Football news £1.19
This app is basically a football reader which delivers all the latest news to your iPhone. When you click on a story it then fires up the web browser and grabs the page. It is reasonably smart, so you can apply a filter on it to focus on your favourite team. There are club versions too for many Premiership teams too.

iBet football calculator £1.19
This £1.19 app. allows you to work out how much money you’d make if your football related bets come in. It downloads and retrieves the latest odds and then tells you how much money you just might win.

Toon chants 59p

Cheer up Newcastle fans, you might have the prospect of a trip to Scunthorpe United coming up, but at least you have your own iPhone app. Toon Chants collects all the classics in one place all delivered to you Brown aled up Geordies in fine voice. Bizarrely though it has no Blaydon Races. There are similar apps for most big teams. The Arsenal one strangely only runs at a very low volume.

Football Hooligans 59p
And finally the runt of the litter, Football Hooligans allows you to burn down stadiums, brawl in the street or simply kick your friends’ butts. It is about enticing as it sounds.

  • have an iPod Touch and want to try the Sky Sports app. O2 are offering three months free if you have an iPhone with them. If anyone has one but has no interest in. I’m fair game for a trade.

  • Anyone have an iPhone on o2, and not interested in Sky Sports app?
