GNER is using technology to tempt us back on the trains – announcing that its entire train fleet (41 trains) now has wireless internet installed, 6 months ahead of its original schedule.

GNER is claiming it now operates the world’s biggest fleet of wireless internet equipped train carriages, and Britain’s first all-WiFi train fleet. GNER trains send and receive communications signals via a combination of a roof-mounted satellite dish and mobile phone antenna, using 3G and GPRS technology. Each coach along the entire length of the train is then connected via the onboard wireless network to create a ‘hot spot’ throughout every coach on the train.

The service is free in first class, with a ‘pay-as-you-go’ system operating for standard carriages, starting at £2.95 for 30 minutes use through to £9.95 for up to 24 hours’ use, wiht payment by credit card.
