North Pole goes online

First Little Chef. Now the North Pole. If
you’re wondering what links the two, the answer is: wi-fi. The Register have
just reported that two intel employees on an expedition to the north pole
decided to set up a wi-fi access point (802.11b/g, if you’re curious)about 80km from the pole itself, in an act of what can only be called ‘xtreme networking’.
The network, despite the artic temperature, is up and running, providing access
to the net via an iridium satellite phone. Which I’m sure will be a relief to
those of you wondering how they would check Tech Digest while trekking through
some of the most inhospitable environments known to man.
