Facebook hits 140 million active users

The social networking behemoth rumbles on. As of yesterday, Facebook has over 140 million active users. The site is growing at a rate of 600,000 users a day. That’s a whole lot of poking.

Extrapolating the trend, you find that by March the company could hit 200 million active users. Interestingly, 70% of the growth is coming from outside the States, meaning that the market in the USA (and likely the UK, too) has possibly matured and is no longer growing as fast.

Spore becomes most pirated game ever

spore-box-art.jpg

Largely thanks to the draconian DRM bundled with Will Wright’s ‘Spore’, the life-simulation game has been downloaded an epic 1.7 million times since its release at the start of September. If my maths is right, that means that one copy is downloaded every five seconds or so. If that rate had been maintained over the whole year, then people would have snagged 6.5 million copies.

Interestingly, second place in this year’s top ten most pirated games, published by Torrentfreak, was the Sims 2, showing that piracy isn’t limited to hardcore gamers (who generally hate the Sims), it’s become a perfectly mainstream pastime among ordinary people. It’s impressive that despite being released in 2004, it’s still right up at the top of the list, though it’s unclear how The Sims 2’s multiple add-on packs are counted.

How appropriate. Just a few days after Talk Like a Pirate Day 2008, the Pirate Bay – the world’s most notorious bittorrent tracker – has announced that it has hit 15 million peers, and 3 million registered users. For those of you unfamiliar with bittorrent terminology, that means that they’ve got 3 million uploaders, and 15 million downloaders. That’s more than the populations of Norway and Sweden put together…

New figures out today suggest that Facebook has supplanted MySpace as the world’s most popular social network, boasting 132m people in June versus MySpace’s 117.5m. A spokesperson for MySpace said in reaction to the news “It’s not fair, everyone hates me, the only person who understands me is Gerard Way from My Chemical Romance. Mood: Sad & Depressed :(“

And so, the rise of the crazy ABOVE THE LAW Swedish Bittorrent site continues.

According to shaky-but-all-we-have internet traffic monitor Alexa, The Pirate Bay has just eased itself into the global top 100 at a cool 97th. No doubt the launch of GTA IV helped it shift up a place or two.

With a total monthly unique user count of something around 25 million – up from 3 million in 2006 – The Pirate Bay is clearly doing…

Japanese man manages 780,000 porn hits in nine months – earns himself a demotion

japanese-man-porn-world-record.jpg

A keen pornography fan in Japan managed to rack up a sensational 780,000 hits for various types of porn in the space of nine months – while he was at work.

The unnamed – but heroic and hard-working – Kinokawa city government employee was demoted when officials discovered his habit and examined the data logs, discovering the 780,000 offending hits. We’re not sure what definition of “hits” they’re using here, but he still clearly…
