More Zunes on the way in 2009

zune-logo.jpg

Despite its poor retail performance over Christmas, Microsoft remains firmly committed to its Zune MP3 player, and a good thing too. It’s one of the few players in the market that has relentlessly innovated, and still packs features that are lacking on others, like wireless syncing and device-to-device song sharing.

Well, the pace continues. Marketing Director for Zune, Adam Sohn, has revealed to Cnet that “there will be new Zunes before the 2009 holiday season” and they’ll be a “surprising step up” from what’s currently available. That almost certainly means a touchscreen, but that isn’t ‘surprising’ so I wonder what he could mean…

Whatever happens, it’s unlikely to displace the iPod, but given Microsoft’s track record of new features, I can’t wait to see what they’ve got to offer.

Windows 7 – the full details, with screenshots

windows-7-taskbar.png

Okay, as promised, here’s the lowdown on Windows 7 – Microsoft’s new operating system – which could be launched as early as the middle of next year.

The UI is rather different to XP and Vista, contrary to what I said the other day about things not changing much. The taskbar is the biggest change – you can see it above. All words have been replaced with big icons, which then show window previews when you move your cursor over them…

Apple unveils new 13-inch MacBook and 15-inch MacBook Pro

macbook_october_2008.jpg

Apple has taken the wraps off two new notebooks: the 13-inch MacBook and 15-inch MacBook Pro.

The 13-inch MacBook features a precision aluminium unibody enclosure — in other words, it’s constructed from a single solid piece of metal and is much thinner than its predecessor. Not as thin as the MacBook Air, of course, but not bad at 2.41cms.

The ultra-thin 13.3-inch LED backlit display is bright, yet the whole unit is thinner than its outdated LCD relative. It can display up to 1,280 x 800 resolution…

The Polaroid is BACK, baby.. yeahhhh!

‘Click – Snap – Phizzzzzzz.. Plunk. Flap, flap, flap, flap, flap, flap, flap..’

All the sounds of the late great Polaroid Instamatic Camera.. Ahh, how we loved thee.

Not enough to keep buying you perhaps.. but, ahh.. how we loved you all the same.

Yes, the world suffered a great loss in the tragic demise of the Polaroid camera. We mourned it’s passing. We searched on ebay to pick up a straggler. Well, i did. But just when hope was lost, when days were at their darkest.. like a little photographic version of the messiah – the saviour rose again. Indeed, what was once lost is now found, and news that the unique little camera is making it’s way back to the shelves is surely the delight of many a consumer. But things are different this time around, this time it’s wearing a brand new set of 21st Century techno-togs, all like, digitalised and shiny and stuff. A veritable Jesus in a nanotube toga.

Weak bloggers cave in to Metallica's new album non-review demands

metallica-album-release-pr-review-shame.jpg

This story’s a bit of a mess. We know some UK bloggers were invited to listen to an “unmixed” demo of the new Metallica album and weren’t required to sign any non-disclosure agreements or stick to an embargo regarding what they heard.

Which meant they could all, quite legally, tell the world all about it on their blogs.

So sites like The Quietus ran with reviews (cached version here) – only to get told to take them down shortly afterwards. This has, predictably enough, turned into a mammoth Metallica HATE-FEST with everyone blaming the put-upon band for trying to break the internet again…
