Firefox 3 has been downloaded close to 6 million times now, deemed a success

firefox-3-pic.jpg

Have you downloaded Firefox 3 yet? Better scoot on, as you’ve only got a few more hours left if you want your download to count in their Guinness Book of World Records attempt.

At the moment, 5,878,774 people have downloaded the new browser, with the US, Australia, Brazil, China, Japan, Iran, Spain, France, Germany, Poland, Italy and the United Kingdom being the most supportive with over 500,000 downloads per country.

Actually, scratch that – in the time it took me to write those few sentences, thousands more people have clicked the ‘download’ button – it’s now at 5,898,474. Now it’s 5,907,602. This is turning out to be quite addictive…

YouTube Hits: documentary about Tumblr and the 'idiots' who use it

tumblr. – The Documentary from DaveAOK on Vimeo.
Tumblr, for those not in the know, is a micro-blogging platform where you ‘reblog’ things of interest you see around the internet. It’s a fantastic service, although I must admit mine has been rather neglected of late.

This ‘documentary’ is a hilarious look at the site, and the type of people who inhabit it – ‘idiots and arseholes’, apparently. It’s worth a quick look if only for the chuckles you’ll get with the introduction, done in a ‘Look Around You‘ stylee…

Toshiba controversially announces their new 1080p upscaling technology will rival Blu-ray

QOSMIO-UPSCALED.jpg

Early June a rumour emerged that Toshiba would be launching a new attack on Sony, via the magic of new ‘upscaling’ technology. Of course, this is nothing new, with Toshiba themselves working on similar products for “some considerable years, at least 3-5 years”, with DVD players, TVs and now laptops containing the upscaling chips, plus with their ‘Super-resolution’ imagery where SD-content is upscaled via an interpolation algorithm to 1080p.

However, today at a London event, Toshiba formally announced upscaling would be their next plan of attack on Sony, claiming they would be focussing on “taking standard content, and displaying in HD format”. This technology, upscaling standard definition content, such as a DVD, to a higher resolution, has long been controversial for not even comparing to the real high-def experience that comes via Blu-ray, or HD DVD…

German virus attacking UK World of Warcraft and Counterstrike players – is this WWIII?

wow-worm-prevx.jpg

This morning I spoke with a French hacker-turned do-gooder, Jacques Erasmus, who uses his extraordinary knowledge over at online security company Prevx. According to Erasmus, a virus was created last Wednesday which is targeting gamers on World of Warcraft and Counterstrike.

Created in Germany, the worm is spread on MSN Messenger, where a spam message directing users to an infected site is sent out to a user’s complete contact list, in turn automatically sending itself to all of their contacts as well.

The worm then searches through the user’s hard drive, searching for log-in details to World of Warcraft and Counterstrike, as well as PayPal and Barclays Bank amongst others. The information is then uploaded to an FTP site, where the hackers can view all the details, as well as anyone else clever enough to gain entrance, such as Erasmus, who viewed hundreds of people’s details…

Horrific animatronic teddy bear hacked to 'speak' your Twitter friends' updates

twittering-teddy-bear.jpg

The micro-blogging service Twitter has been at the centre of many recent mods, including an awesome home automation system, however I doubt the previous hacks have been as dramatic as this.

You might know of Nabaztags, the Wi-Fi rabbits which translate your data (emails, RSS etc) into visual and audio alerts – taking inspiration from this product, the My Home 2.0 team outfitted an animatronic teddy bear with various chips and circuit boards, plus a Bluetooth audio adapter. The results…

LG attempts to smooth over the whole 'laptop exploding incident' with the P300 notebook

lg-p300.jpg

LG isn’t exactly renowned for manufacturing laptops, particularly after the whole exploding laptop ‘incident’ earlier in the year, yet they’re trying to bounce back with the P300.

Measuring 13.3-inches, the P300 was shown off at the World IT Show in Seoul, where AVING managed to snag some photos. Reportedly with an LED-backlit screen, it weighs 1.6kg and contains an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz processor, NVIDIA Geforce 8600M graphics card, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, 250GB SATA HDD and…

Most beautiful MacBook concept to date – check out the blue LEDs! Phwroar!

macbook-concept.jpg

Steve Jobs sure did disappoint at the WWDC event last week, didn’t he? Not only did he announce an underwhelming iPhone, he also failed to announce new MacBooks which we were all expecting.

Perhaps if we drop enough hints he’ll realise what we really want from a MacBook is a slim exterior, with…blue LEDs! Hey, if it worked for Tron, it can work for Apple, with the above concept being at the pinnacle of hope for a new range….

Don't bother rescuing the princess, just grab some Nintendo decals from Blik instead

super-mario-wallpaper.jpg

It’s common knowledge ’round these parts that I dress as Mario at every available opportunity. Heck, you’ve probably even seen me right here on Tech Digest in my costume. So it’ll be of no surprise to you that I am salivating over these Super Mario Bros. decals for walls, then.

The hardest part is choosing between Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, or New Super Mario Bros. however – although at $75 a pop, you better choose just one or you won’t have any gold coins left over for actual games…

Smartphone without the QWERTY keyboard? Nokia's E66 with HSDPA fits the bill

e-66-nokia(2).jpg

Think you can bash out those work emails faster without a QWERTY keyboard? Grab one of Nokia’s E66 smartphones, and show me.

Much the same as the E71 also announced today, the E66 comes ready with push email and Microsoft Exchange, for viewing Microsoft documents as well as accessing calendars, contacts and tasks. HSDPA, A-GPS, Nokia Maps, and a 3.2-megapixel camera are all supplied, however the one main difference between the two handsets (apart from the obvious lack of a QWERTY), is that…

Nokia packs a surprising punch with the HSDPA-enabled E71 smartphone

nokia-e71(2).jpg

Hesitant about joining the hordes of sore-thumbed BlackBerry users, and greasy-fingered iPhone addicts? Nokia’s launch of the E71 smartphone today should not only be music to your ears, but hand lotion on your fingers.

As expected from a business handset, the full QWERTY keyboard is targeted at consumers who want push-email, and Microsoft Exchange compatibility. Encased in a metallic shell, it has HSDPA connectivity, plus A-GPS and Nokia Maps. A surprising 3.1-megapixel camera with autofocus is also included, as are…
