Google bored of having money – donating $175m to various charities

google-charity-donations.jpgThe piles of cash everywhere at Google HQ are getting a bit too much. Some office doors won’t even open any more, and there’s no cupboard space left for essentials like pens and envelopes thanks to all the bundles of fifties wedged in every cabinet.

That’s why (in one possible dimension) Google has revealed it’s throwing $175 million into helping fight global infection outbreaks – by developing new computer systems…

David Tennant-autographed Dalek up for grabs on eBay

jonathan-ross-dalek-doctor-who.jpg
It’s not often the opportunity to own a one-off David Tennant autographed Dalek comes up, and it’s even rarer when it’s containing recorded speech from Nick Briggs (who does the Dalek voices in Doctor Who, durr), and it’s even more rare when it’s been featured on the Friday Night with Jonathan Ross TV show.

The Dalek’s recorded speech was made especially for the show, and all proceeds go to charedee, specifically…

One Laptop Per Child kicks off November 12th, two XO laptops for $399

one-laptop-per-child.jpg
We haven’t heard much from the One Laptop Per Child program recently, so I was fairly shocked to discover on my internet trawls that the program will kick off officially on November 12th.

The previously quoted cost per laptop of $100 has obviously been thrown out the window, with a more realistic price-tag of $399 being attached to each pair of Linux-based laptop. The idea is that customers purchase two laptops for $399, and one will be given to a child in a developing country. The XO laptops,…

Vaughan Smith, English video journalist, Twittering live from Afghanistan

vaughansmith.jpg
How many of us actually use Twitter for a worthwhile purpose – or even use it at all, these days? Most of my friends’ Twitter feeds are updated with dry accounts of whether they chose sushi or a sandwich for lunch – not the most interesting read, let me tell you!

Luckily there’s a video journalist out there who’s making all us Twitterers look good by association, and that man is Vaughan Smith…

Mr Men and Little Miss Celebrity podcasts raise money for Variety Club

variety_club_mister_men_podcast.gifMaybe it’s because I’m feeling nostalgic (caught Danger Mouse and Top Cat on daytime telly today) and charitable, but here’s another story that caught my eye today: Mr Men and Little Miss celebrity charity podcasts.

Six of the UK’s favourite celebrities — Tony “Time Team” Robinson, Joanna “Ab Fab” Lumley, Wendy “Pauline Fowler” Richard (shall I stop this now?), Neil Fox, Ben Shephard, and John Simm — will record a Mr Men or a Little Miss story podcast in order to raise money for the Variety Club.
