Today’s bargain is for those of you who want to spend some serious cash on a camcorder. Bearing in mind that Sony equipment is pretty pricey at the best of times, and you can get other camcorders for less, I present to you the Sony Handycam HDR-SR12E.
With an RRP of £1,049, Amazon.co.uk is currently selling this beast for £749.99 — that’s a nearly £300 (29%) saving.
What do you get for your money, apart from the Sony name itself?…
JVC's 2009 Everio camcorder range
JVC’s just sent us a bunch of details about their 2009 lineup of camcorders, and because we’re nice, I fancied sharing them with you. There’s the HD range, the G-series and the S-series. The HD range, as you might imagine from the name, are high-definition, the S-series model has dual SD card slots, and the G series is a mixed bag.
Let’s start with the S-series, because the word “start” begins with S. There’s only one new model here, the GZ-MS120. As previously mentioned, it’s got dual SD card slots and you can record continuously, so that if you run out of space on one it’ll automatically swap to the other. In highest quality mode, you’ll get 3.7 hours of recording from a pair of 8GB SD cards. In lowest quality, you’ll get about 20 hours.
Toshiba pushes out new 1080p Camileo Pocket DV camcorders
Toshiba today announces two new members of its Camileo range of highly portable camcorders, both of which are capable of shooting in full (1080p) high definition mode.
The Camileo H20 is an upgraded version of the H10 launched last summer, and features 1440 x 1080 shooting (not quite the standard widescreen 1920 x 1080 you’d expect from HDTV or a Blu-ray disc, but a fair compromise for a handheld device), 5x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom, video stabilisation, night shooting mode, YouTube upload facility, 5-megapixel digital stills and HDMI output…
Creative launches Vado HD pocket camcorder in the UK
Creative has finally brought the high definition follow-up to its Vado pocket camcorder to the UK.
The Vado HD offers 720p filming at an unspecified frame rate (though to be true 720p it needs to be at least 24fps – it’s probably 30fps) as well as VGA (YouTube friendly) recording at 30fps.
It’s constructed using a wide-angle glass lens and comes with a 2x digital zoom (yes, digital: pixellation city here we come). Its 8GB of onboard memory should let you shoot around two hours of HD footage, or eight hours at 640×480/30fps…
CES 2009: LEGO-inspired kids gadgets coming soon courtesy of Digital Blue
One of the quirkier stories to come out of CES this year was the partnership between Digital Blue and LEGO which will see a number of kid-centric gadgets produced with the iconic plastic brick look.
This isn’t build it yourself, unfortunately, so don’t think you’ll be able to buy a box full of LEGO pieces, a CMOS sensor, LCD and a few buttons and create your own digital camera. It’s just the look, rather than the actual coloured blocks, but that’s probably just as well as it would be pretty irritating to drop said camera and have it break into a hundred pieces…
CES 2009: Samsung intros new YouTube-friendly camcorder, plus an ergonomic high def one
Samsung is just one of several companies showing off its latest range of camcorders, with a model to suit most consumer needs, from YouTube enthusiasts to budding high definition filmmaker. We’ve already seen the H Series of HD handhelds, but Samsung is also catering for those who haven’t jumped on to the high definition bandwagon yet, but are most definitely riding along on the YouTube train.
The SMX-F34 camcorder can’t boast the same filming resolution as the H Series – we’re talking strictly standard definition (up to 720 x 480) here — but it does have a ridiculously large 34x optical zoom range that can be boosted to 42x with the Intelli-Zoom function…
Samsung announces 64GB SSD H-Series HD camcorder, and some others too
Not to be outdone by Canon, Samsung has also released info about a range of new camcorders that it’ll be bringing to market later in the year. They all come under the banner of H-Series, which seems to mean nothing except that their meaningless product numbers all begin with H.
In full, there’s the HMX-H106, HMX-H105, HMX-H104, and HMX-H100. They’ve got HD sensors, and lenses from Schneider Kreuznach that have a 10X zoom and “Optical Image Stabilisation”. One of the models in particular – the top-of-the-line HMX-H106 – comes with a 64GB SSD, which I believe is the first camcorder with a drive that big.

IFA 2008: JVC Everio HD30 and HD40
Over in Berlin, Zara’s been hunting down camcorders – specifically the new Everios from JVC – the HD30 and HD40. They’ve got dual-format recording, so they record in both MPEG2 and AVCHD. This means you can get far more video into much less storage space. 50 hours onto the 120GB HD40. It’s got 10x optical zoom, and records at 1080p.
No price point, no release date, but we’ll let you know as soon as we hear anything…
