It's Friday, which means that we round up the top five winners in tech for this week, as well as the biggest loser. Once again we have some hot gadgets and cool new websites, but which is going to take top spot?
Acer A1 Android phone on its way
Well now Expansys has the phone listed on its site, so we also know that it has a five mega pixel camera, runs Android 2,.0 Donut, a 3.5inch WVGA screen, GPS, a 3.5mm jack, Bluetotoh, HSPA and standby battery time of up to 400 hours.
Acer revs up Ferrari One laptop
Of course all that the PC has in common with the car is its dancing horse logo and red livery, but don't let that put you off. Under the hood it has a dual-core AMD Athlon X2 L310 1.2GHz CPU and 2GB of 800MHz DDR 2 memory, a 250 Gig hard drive and an ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics processor.
Acer's F900 smartphone heads to UK
After debuting at Mobile World Congress the pleasent little Acer F900 has cut a lonely figure, cast firmly in the shadow of the smartphone war that still rages between Palm Pre and iPhone 3G.
The F900 has it’s own original UI too you know! Its got a 3.8inch VGA screen, its got intuitive web-browsing and widgets, its got Adobe Flash Lite support! You’re not listening are you? Because it’s not a Palm Pre or an iPhone. I don’t blame you. I don’t want one either.
The Acer F900 isn’t sexy, in fact it’s eminently plain, it’s a digestive biscuit of a phone. And an expensive biscuit at £429. It probably won’t sell well in the high street, so Acer will sell them en-mass to businesses who’ll farm them out to their footsoldiers – and they’ll be grateful – won’t you.
Garmin-Asus go Android with their smartphones next year
It’s always struck me as a strange marriage but the satnav/netbook team of Garmin-Asus announced today that their first Android-based mobile phone will be in our hands by the end of Q1 next year.
Their announcement at Computex, Taipei, might be lacking a little thunder after Acer pre-trumped them in both timescale and device but it’s another interesting move away from the Microsoft stables. Garmin-Asus’s current launches, the M20 and the G60, both run Windows Mobile and it’d be no surprise if Asus doesn’t follow Acer’s lead with Android platforms on their PCs too.
If having Garmin in on the deal didn’t already feel like a way Asus could financially hedge bets, then it does now. They’re saying that it’s Garmin who’ll still be taking care of the location-based services as well as geo-tagging but I can still see most users opting for Google maps.
All the same, I’m looking forward to getting my hands on one of these. Say what you like about Asus but they’re innovative. The Keyboard and touchscreen Eee PC T91 are evidence of that if nothing else. I’d be surprised if they made a mess of Android, especially with Garmin sitting on their shoulder.

Packard Bell are back! Get excited
Remember Packard Bell? Back when computers had 8 gig hard-drives, the internet was but a pipe dream, and WordArt was about the best thing you could do on your PC? You do! I’m glad, me too.
Well, the Dutch based company is back as a part of Acer, and with a snazzy new logo and some interesting products to boot.
Most interesting of all is it’s iMax-Mini nettop, which is actually just a revamped Acer Revo. But what it means is you get an Atom processor on nVidia’s ION platform, giving the iMax-Mini significantly more punch than most other nettops.
And because it comes with a motion sensor game control Packard Bell are seeing it as, “a rival to the Wii”, however outlandish that might sound. It’ll be available in the UK with a 19 inch monitor on broadband deals.
Packard also unveiled their high-end EasyNote TR85, a snazzy-ass notebook, featuring an edge-to-edge display, multi-touch trackpad and slot loading optical drive. And at just £599 with a feature-set and styling to make your eyes water, the EasyNote might hit right note with buyers.
And finally, the obligatory netbook: The 10.1 inch dot s and 11.6in dot m wield multi-gesture touchpads, Dolby headphone, optional 3G and six-cell batteries and though they’re hitting a market already saturated market, the fact that they come with Photoshop Elements 4 pre-installed might shift a few units.
Acer Exec confirms Windows 7 release date: 23rd October
“23rd October is the date the Windows 7 will be available” says Bobby Watkins, Acer’s UK MD. The company will be releasing its all-in-one Z5600 PC on that date, and it will come pre-loaded with Windows 7.
Microsoft is still claiming a release date of January 2010, but the company has acknowledged that it’s running ahead of schedule on the follow-up to its poorly-received Vista. Any Vista-based PCs purchased within 30 days prior to 23rd October will be eligible for a free upgrade.
