3 to release INQ handset with massive Facebook integration

Continuing in 3’s long tradition of trying to shake up the established phone industry, the network is planning to launch a new phone next week called INQ. It builds on the direction that the Skypephone started, and features very close integration with social-networking behemoth Facebook.

Although info about the phone has been floating around for a little while, we’ve got the official confirmation from 3 now, and they’re holding a press event next Thursday to announce the handset. It’s a not-particularly-pretty-looking slider phone, but where it really shines is in the software. Your Facebook contacts are your phonebook. Your SMS messages are Facebook messages. IM is handled over Facebook chat…

3 to launch one-touch YouTube mobile phone in UK early next year

With all the fuss surrounding the likes of the iPhone (O2) and the HTC G1 (T-Mobile), it seems that 3 is feeling a little left out, and so has said that it will launch a Sony Ericsson Walkman phone offering one button access to YouTube.

Due to be launched first in Italy, followed by the UK early next year, the phone will allow users to upload videos directly to YouTube. Sounds like a recipe for disaster as it becomes even easier to upload videos of drunken nights out. According to 3 Italia, mobile service usage increases by around one-third when direct access is supported — in other words, stick a button on a mobile phone that gives access to just one service, and people are more likely to use it. Magic…

3 launches D100 wireless router for dongles

Mobile operator underdogs 3 have just launched an addition to their family of wireless dongles – a wireless router. It’s quite a smart idea – it allows you to plug a 3 wireless dongle in, and it’ll act like an access point, when there isn’t one normally available. Given usual 3G speeds, however, how fast this would actually run when split between “up to 32” people is open to debate…

3 blasts other mobile networks: "The industry has completely and utterly lost touch"

3-kevin-russell.jpg

At a regulatory round table event this morning, 3 CEO, Kevin Russell, fumed at other UK mobile carriers, accusing them of “scaring consumers senseless” over roaming charges, and calling the current UK regulatory environment “farcical”, “a fundamental failure” and absurd”.

3, which has less than 10% of the market in the UK, has struggled over recent years to compete with the big boys – O2, Vodafone, Orange and T-Mobile. Kevin Russell, however, who joined the company in January last year, is tasked with changing the status quo. To say that he’s upset about the currently regulatory climate would be an understatement…

Survey reveals that you work way too hard

A survey by phone network 3 has revealed some nasty statistics about quite how much you lot work. Turns out that 31% of you feel you have to be contactable by work whenever and wherever you are, 23% of you have answered calls or sent emails whilst down the pub, 25% have worked on public transport and 13% of you have sent emails and made work calls from the doctor’s surgery (in the waiting room, I presume)…
