Yahoo launch Fire Eagle location-based internet… thing

Last night Yahoo finally took it’s long awaited (by nerds) Fire Eagle out of private beta so now anyone can sign up and use it.

But… What is it? Like everything web 2.0, the name doesn’t describe it very accurately. Basically it’s a system designed to act as the middle-man between you and a whole load of location-aware applications, so that you only have to log your location once and it’ll syndicate it with every other Fire Eagle equipped location service you use…

Look who's stalking: FindMe now supports s60 Nokias.

Facebook stalkers everywhere will be delighted to learn that Electric Pocket has finally got around to releasing a client for FindMe, the Facebook stalking geo-location application, for s60 mobile phones (ie: most high-end Nokias).

FindMe has been available for Windows Mobile and Blackberry devices for ages, and can be used to “tag” locations (“home”, “work”, etc) and automatically update your Facebook profile with your location. Somewhat uniquely, it doesn’t require your phone to have GPS to function – it works out your position based on nearby mobile phone masts alone. Whilst this is perhaps slightly less accurate than GPS, it does mean that more phones are compatible…

Olympic flash drives don't make up for your lack of sporting ability. Sorry.

Sure, the band doesn’t have any principles, but at least it’s making a lot of money and can buy lots of nice things because of it.

The Olympics is proving even more lucrative for China, with Lenovo producing a line of… Olympic-themed flash drives…

Lenovo announces Thinkpad with built in Wacom tablet. It's huge.

Laptops are generally known for portability – the idea being that you can sling it in your bag and carry it with you wherever you go. I wouldn’t try lugging about the Lenovo ThinkPad W700 too much though, as you might risk back problems. It’s massive.

Perhaps the main reason it is so gigantic is the built in Wacom tablet – which in the photo looks like a massive touchpad…

Vodafone to offer free access to BBC Olympic content

vodafone_logo.gif

Vodafone is going for gold in the race to provide the best mobile Olympic service, and I’ve just died a little inside after using such a horribly clichéd figure of speech.

Vodafone has joined up with the BBC and is offering free access to the latter’s Olympic coverage, which is no doubt music to the ears to those stuck on stone-age mobile phone data tariffs (so pretty much everyone in Britain, then)…

If you’re not an emotionless killing machine but wish you were though, Vince Veneziani over at Gearfuse has got you covered – he’s put together a tutorial on how to make yourself some sunglasses like those worn by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the first Terminator film…
