Ionity opens first London urban charging hub with free charging today

Electric vehicle drivers can take advantage of free charging today as Ionity officially opens its first urban charging site in London at Greenwich Shopping Park.

Located on Bugsby’s Way, the new hub marks a strategic shift for the company as it expands beyond traditional motorway corridors into more dense urban areas where demand for electric vehicle infrastructure is surging.

To celebrate the launch, Ionity is running a “Free Friday” promotion, allowing all drivers to charge their vehicles for free for 24 hours today, August 21, 2026, via the Ionity app.

The site features 12 ultra-rapid charging bays capable of delivering up to 400 kW, designed to power up EVs in minutes. Situated near retail destinations, the O2 and major roads such as the A206, the hub is ideally positioned to serve local residents, visitors and commercial drivers, claims Ionity.

The hub also supports Ionity’s ongoing partnership with Uber, which provides reliable, high-power charging access tailored to high-mileage ride-hailing drivers. This initiative aids Uber’s goal of operating as a zero-emission platform by 2040 and aligns with London’s net-zero carbon targets for 2030.

Following previous urban launches in locations such as Birmingham, Ionity plans to have roughly 30% of its total European network situated in dense urban environments by 2030, with further sites currently under development across major UK cities including London, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh.
