Balance phone expands globally as demand for distraction-free tech surges

The Barcelona-based startup Balance Phone has expanded internationally, selling more than 8,000 devices across over 50 countries.

The UK has emerged as its strongest market, accounting for over 50% of total sales.

At its core, the device is based on standard Samsung hardware running a locked-down operating system called Balance OS.

Depending on the model chosen, it repurposes Samsung devices—such as a basic Galaxy model or a higher-spec Galaxy S25 – to serve as a minimalist alternative to traditional smartphones.

The phone is aimed at digital minimalists and families seeking a safer first smartphone for children and teenagers. More than half of its customers are parents looking to protect minors from compulsive digital overstimulation.

Unlike conventional handsets, the device aims to strike a balance between old-school dumbphones and modern tech by retaining essential utilities such as mapping, banking, messaging and music. However, it structurally blocks addictive platforms including social media, gaming and streaming services at the operating-system level.

According to reviews including TechRadar’s Balance Phone review, the device enforces rigorous limitations on browsing behaviour, even blocking image searches and alternative web browsers. Users have reported that screen time dramatically drops from up to six hours a day to under an hour.

By removing infinite scrolls and high-stimulation apps, the startup aims to return control back to the user. Balance claims it aims to provide a practical tool for anyone looking to curb their social media habit without sacrificing modern communication essentials.
