AI has become operational backbone of global supply chains, report claims

Artificial intelligence has officially moved beyond the experimental phase in global logistics, evolving into the operational backbone of the industry.
According to a major new industry report, Putting the AI into Supply ChAIns, published by international delivery specialists Parcelhero, the transformation of the supply chain is accelerating at an unprecedented pace.
The report reveals a seismic shift within the UK logistics sector, with the proportion of transport and storage firms utilising AI jumping from 16.1% to 27.1% in the first three months of 2026 alone – a remarkable eleven percentage-point surge in just ninety days.
David Jinks, Parcelhero’s Head of Consumer Research and author of the report, believes the era of hesitation is over. “Firms are no longer piloting or exploring AI – they are embedding it,” Jinks states. “The early movers are gaining measurable advantages that will make it very hard for slower adopters to close the gap.”
The tangible benefits are already being felt across the entire logistics ecosystem. In distribution, AI-driven route optimisation is yielding a 10% reduction in costs and a 15% improvement in on-time delivery rates.
Algorithms can now reorder sequences of over 100 delivery stops in seconds, processing complex variables such as live traffic, weather patterns, and customer preferences simultaneously.
The “last mile” – traditionally the most expensive segment of shipping – is also being fundamentally reimagined. Intelligent systems can now forecast shipment volumes for specific facilities with up to 95% accuracy, enabling firms to pre-position stock before demand is officially registered.
In the warehouse, predictive maintenance flags equipment failures before they occur, while autonomous robots dynamically navigate the floors to maximise efficiency.
The impact extends to maritime and air freight as well. From the success of the autonomous container ship Yara Birkeland to automated customs documentation that slashes processing times from days to minutes, AI is replacing reactive problem-solving with predictive, data-driven workflows.
However, the transition is not without its hurdles. Many organisations are struggling to integrate AI with outdated legacy systems and manual workflows that are incompatible with real-time data requirements.
There are also concerns over job cuts, although these may not be as serious as many feared: “Our analysis of ONS data shows that 31% of AI-adopting transport and storage firms reported no change in headcount, and reports of definite job cuts were statistically negligible,” says Jinks.
“The more pressing challenge is reskilling rather than redundancy. The supply chains that will lead their industries by 2030 are those investing in data quality, digital infrastructure, and workforce capability today.”
