A new front has opened up in the battle for dominance in AI chips, as Nvidia said its latest development could replace the mouse and keyboard in how people use computers. The $5tn (£3.7tn) US semiconductor company has launched a “superchip” that puts AI capabilities into laptops and desktop computers, a move that will pit it against Intel, Apple, Qualcomm and AMD. The RTX Spark chip will be launched this year, and will be used by computer makers including Dell, Lenovo, Asus and HP, paired with Microsoft’s Windows software, according to the Nvidia chief executive, Jensen Huang. OpenAI has offered nine major UK banks access to its cyber security AI tool GPT-5.5 Cyber, as its fierce rival Anthropic has blocked them in previews of its version, Claude Mythos. Both tools are designed to find hidden security weaknesses in digital systems and can outperform humans at some hacking and cyber-security tasks. Mythos caused a stir when it was announced in April, with Anthropic claiming it had found a weakness in one legacy system which had remained hidden for nearly 30 years. BBC

In the little town of Sterling, Virginia, 25 miles north-west of Washington, DC, residents have had enough of the data centre hum. A few hundred metres from rows of neat, suburban houses, a vast warehouse operated by technology giant Vantage Data Centers has been whirring non-stop, according to its neighbours. Videos posted on social media, taken from a road near the facility, reveal a tinny whine that locals say is audible almost all the time. “They built a building with gas turbines in it – the gas turbines create this high-pitched whistle,” says Lindsay Shaw, a cyber security specialist who lives next door to one Vantage building. You have had McAfee antivirus software installed on your laptop for years after becoming fearful that your computer would be infected. So when an email arrives to say your protection is about to expire, you are not surprised. Better still, there is a “renewal discount” of 89% if you pay on the same day. “Once the expiration date has passed, your computer becomes susceptible to many different virus threats,” the email warns. It is, however, a fake email sent not by the company that has become synonymous with anti-virus software, but by criminals who are hoping to harvest your financial details. The Guardian
