VW introduces £16.50 monthly subscription to unlock EV power

Volkswagen has introduced a new subscription service in the UK that allows customers to pay a recurring fee to unlock additional power in select electric cars.
The controversial move, which applies to eligible models in the company’s ID.3 range, gives drivers the option to purchase a “power upgrade” on a monthly, annual, or lifetime basis. The upgrade costs £16.50 per month or £165 annually, with a one-off payment of £649 for a permanent boost.
The move marks a significant shift in how car manufacturers monetize vehicle features, especially as the industry transitions to electric vehicles. While the idea of a car subscription service is not new, VW’s approach of charging for a pre-installed feature has sparked debate among consumers.
VW defended the decision by arguing that it is “nothing new,” comparing it to the historical practice of offering petrol and diesel cars with the same engine size but different power outputs. The company says the subscription offers customers the flexibility to opt for a “sportier” driving experience without a higher upfront purchase price.
VW is not alone in this strategy. Other car manufacturers, including BMW and Mercedes, have experimented with similar subscription models for features such as heated seats and enhanced acceleration. However, these services have often been met with a mixed reception.
A recent survey from S&P Global indicated that customer willingness to pay for in-car subscriptions is declining, a trend that could pose a challenge to automakers’ plans. Despite the potential for consumer backlash, Volkswagen is proceeding with the subscription, betting that the lure of on-demand performance will appeal to its EV customers.
