Taiwan has the fastest internet speeds in the world, according to a new survey conducted by WebsiteToolTester with the island of Jersey offering the fastest speeds in Europe.

Taiwan saw over a 200% increase in internet speeds between 2018 and 2019. With a download speed of 85Mbps, it would take you only 8.2 minutes to download a movie, in comparison to the slowest country Yemen where it would take just over 30 hours.

Taiwan’s internet speeds have improved over recent years and this growth has been essential for the country. High-tech is Taiwan’s most critical industry, contributing to 18% of the country’s GDP, with electronic manufacturing companies making up the bulk of the sector. Cross-border online shopping trade is continuing to grow strongly in Taiwan, with huge steps being taken to develop a digital economy that encompasses digital media and e-services.

  • Taiwan is the country that has the fastest internet speed in the world with an average speed of 85Mbps

  • 18 of the top 25 countries with the fastest internet speeds are in Europe

  • The UK island of Jersey has the fastest internet speeds in Europe, offering an average speed of 67.46Mbps

The research reveals that 18 of the top 25 countries with the fastest internet speeds are located in Europe with Jersey boasting the fastest internet speeds in Europe with an average speed of 67.46Mbps. This is likely due to the completion of the rollout of a full fibre network in 2018, to 40,000 homes and premises in Jersey – only the second jurisdiction in the world to have completed this.

In comparison, the UK predominantly relies only on fast fibre optic cables between the exchange and the nearest street cabinet, but copper cables completing the connection from the cabinet to homes. Distance from that cabinet will affect speeds with people living at opposite ends of the same street often experiencing vastly different speeds as a result.

Robert Brandl, CEO of WebsiteToolTester comments:

“There’s very little more frustrating than slow internet speeds, especially when it prevents you from working or when you’re trying to connect with colleagues, friends or family.”

“When setting up a website and running a business, a fast internet speed is essential – so it’s interesting to see business hubs such as Taiwan and Singapore, mixed in with smaller countries such as Jersey in the top countries leading the way for fast internet speeds.”
