It’s already well known for its clever thermostat and range of connected devices including smart lighting and plugs. Now Hive has revealed its latest external smart camera (pictured left), the £179 Hive View Outdoor.

Designed to deter unwanted attention and keep people informed of activity outside their property, it launches globally in December and is available now to pre-order from Hive and Amazon.

Weatherproof, element proof and equipped with automatic night vision, the Hive View Outdoor can record sound or motion, sending notifications once recording starts.

A live HD feed gives immediate access to see outside the home, with content captured and securely stored for quick and convenient later viewing. Two-way audio allows people to speak directly through the camera and smart notifications provide thumbnail images of the person detected to help customers quickly check who’s there.

Adjustable Activity Zones will allow customers to choose specific areas of the frame to monitor, while Automated Sounds, such as a dog’s bark, will help deter unwanted attention.

Hive’s third collaboration with designer Yves Béhar, the Hive View Outdoor works within minutes of installation and is managed through the Hive app.

When connected to other Hive devices, extra layers of smart security can be created using Hive Actions. For example, linking Hive Lights to the Hive View Outdoor will make it look like someone is in the house.

Captured video is securely stored remotely and can be viewed and downloaded for free for 24 hours. Once downloaded it can be kept forever. With Hive Video Playback Membership, access to this content is extended for 30 days, giving customers optional extra reassurance that everything is covered, even when away for an extended period of time.

Customers can self-install or purchase professional installation by a British Gas engineer or certified professional. Once on the wall, the magnetic mount allows it to be easily manoeuvred to offer the best possible view with its wide 130° lens and safely secured through an anti-theft mechanism.

Says Tom Guy, Global Product Director, Centrica Hive:

“Our customers have inspired our product designs ever since we started Hive. Protecting their home and loved ones is of the utmost importance and it was clear we needed to extend our security offering to give complete reassurance.

Hive View Outdoor builds on the much loved features found within our stylish indoor camera, Hive View, offering an extra layer of security for the outside of every home.”

The Hive View Outdoor is available for pre-order and will launch early December. Prices starts at £179. When pre-ordered in the UK, customers will receive 10% off single, twin and multi versions of the camera. See Hive for further details.
