Apple doubles the app size limit

Apple has announced to developers that it is now accepting compiled app binaries up to 4GB in size – double the 2GB limit that previously existed.

According to the Apple Developer post, the doubling of capacity for app developers will not affect the 100mb size limit on cellular downloads – so if anyone does make a 4GB app, it will mercifully have to downloaded via wifi.

It remains to be seen what motivated this change – but it is presumably Apple wanting to enable more complex apps, and also could suggest a future increase in iPhone storage capacity. Could the iPhone 7 start with 32GB storage rather than 16, perhaps?
