Iowa isn’t known as “first in the nation” for nothing – the US state is apparently planning legally acceptable driving licenses held on smartphones.

According to Des Moines Register, the licenses that will work through a mobile app will be acceptable during traffic stops and when boarding planes for domestic flights from airports in Iowa.

Apparently the app be secure – requiring a PIN number to access it, and there is also suggestions the same app could be used for other state licenses too.

What’s really interesting is that Apple CEO Tim Cook has recently said that his company’s goal is to “eliminate the wallet” – so could this start a trend that will see us putting our driving licenses into our Passbook?
