Yesterday, Apple’s market cap – the number by which companies are valued – briefly passed over $700bn – and at $703bn was apparently the most valuable company in human history.

According to The Channel, this means that it surpassed even the GDP of Switzerland – so not even all of the Toblerone in the world could topple Tim Cook’s Empire.

Of course, it isn’t entirely as simple as it sounds: Market cap is the share price multiplied by the number of shares, and in any case due to economic factors like inflation, the biggest company is always going to be something from 2014 (sorry, East India Company) – in terms of, say, market share or inherently unquantifiable ‘influence’ it might not be the case.

But one thing is clear – Apple has an astonishingly amount of cash.
