Amazon has announced that it won’t be charging extra for 4K streaming – unlike rivals Netflix.

The news comes just weeks after Netflix announced a price hike for customers wanting 4K quality streaming – to $11.99 from $8.99 in the US. Meanwhile Digital Spy quotes Michael Paull, VP of Amazon Digital Video saying:

“”Amazon Prime members will have access to a great selection of Ultra HD content on Prime Instant Video at no additional cost,”

It’d be interesting to see the cost breakdown in both cases: Perhaps because of its expansive web services, Amazon has the better infrastructure to cope with the demands of 4K… or perhaps it simply has deeper pockets to subsidise Prime subscriptions further.
