Apple has today announced that its CEO, Tim Cook, is gay.

Writing in Business Week, Cook says:

“I don’t consider myself an activist, but I realize how much I’ve benefited from the sacrifice of others. So if hearing that the CEO of Apple is gay can help someone struggling to come to terms with who he or she is, or bring comfort to anyone who feels alone, or inspire people to insist on their equality, then it’s worth the trade-off with my own privacy.”

Unfortunately, Apple has remained quiet on the details: No specs on Cook’s sexuality have been released, nor has the company commented on its expected battery life.

The news will also come as a disappointment to Apple users, who were hoping that rather than a minor revision to Cook’s public persona, we would see a new version of Apple TV – which despite persistent rumours about its forthcoming integral role in Apple’s HomeKit – has still not received an upgrade in a couple of years. Similarly, we still haven’t heard anything concrete about the release of the Apple Watch.

It’ll now be interesting to see if a shock announcement impacts upon Apple’s core business. Though Cook is clearly proud, surely there is a large group of people out there who will be horrified that someone would publicly admit to like U2?
