Twitter putting “Buy” buttons directly on to tweets

Twitter is testing new functionality that could add “buy” buttons direct to tweets – making it easier to buy stuff over the network.

At the moment, the links are only being tested with a handful of US users and a handful of retailers – but if successful could see it roll out to everyone. Here’s Twitter’s video explaining how it works:

If successful, it could be a big deal and very lucrative for Twitter, which though wildly popular has been struggling to figure how to make any actual money from the service. The addition of a “buy” button could be a win for retailers – who will have users have to make less clicks in order to buy something – and for Twitter, which will presumably be getting a cut from everything sold through clickthroughs.

If Amazon combine their one-click with this system, my bank account could be doomed.
