Tesco abandons plans for Hudl phone

Tesco has said that it is putting its plans for its own Android phone on hold – to instead concentrate on building a new version of its budget Hudl tablet.

The first version of the Hudl, that was surprisingly powerful for such a cheap device was surprisingly successful – shifting more than half a million units. It is perhaps only natural that a year on, Tesco feels the need to upgrade.

According to Marketing Week one of the reasons why Tesco abandoned plans for a phone is because the mobile market has become more competitive. Tesco had hoped to get in with a low-cost device and the bottom end of the market – a gap that has since been filled by the likes of the EE Kestrel.

Given the presumably revised sales projections, I guess every little doesn’t actually help all that much.
