Motorola announce new Moto X & Moto G in the most annoying way – and give us the Moto 360 release date

Congratulations to Motorola’s marketing department for coming up with perhaps the most unbearable copy from this year’s IFA show. See if you can make it through this nonsense without despairing at the world. I’ve bolded the particularly hideous bits.

“A year ago we relaunched Motorola with a very clear purpose — to give you more meaningful choices that put you in control of your mobile experience. Today we take that promise to the next level with the introduction of the new Moto X and Moto G smartphones, Moto 360 watch, Moto Hint wireless earbud and Motorola Power Pack Micro. This dynamic new portfolio of products gives you unprecedented power to choose how your mobile technology fits into your life, with new customization options, better value and new ways to connect.”

When you run the press release through a bullshit feature, what this essentially means is that the new Moto X is a fairly decent spec (2.5ghz quadcore, 5.2″ 1080p screen, 13MP rear camera, 2MP front) stock Android device but with the bonus being that Motorola are releasing a bunch of covers made of slightly more unusual materials than usual – such as wood and leather. These covers can be easily swapped out to change the colour of your phone. That’s right – innovation of the kind not seen since the Nokia 3310.

So where does the “Choice” stuff come from? Moto has come up with an online “Moto Maker” store, where you can design and order your own cover, customised in the colours you want.

Essentially, Malibu Stacy has a new hat!

Okay – so designing covers is a nice idea… but let’s not try and wrap it up in grandiose rhetoric like Motorola is liberating us from oppression, please?

So what else is new?

The new Moto G is the new mid-range phone – 1.2ghz processor, 5″ 720p screen with an 8MP camera on the rear and 2MP on the front. This will also support a number of different coloured covers and crucially, be priced at only $179.99 – which is about £110.

Perhaps more interesting is the release of the Moto 360, the much anticipated Android Wear smartwatch and the first with a round face. We’ve known about it for some time, but now we finally know that it will be released in the UK on 14th September for £199. This does appear to be a genuinely exciting new device – which you can “choose” to buy, I guess.

Finally there’s the Moto Hint – some tiny in-ear bluetooth earbuds – which will set you back around $149.99 (about £90).

Which of these devices would you “choose” to buy? Let us know in the comments.
