Three start selling unlocked phones

Good news for mobile phone customers (ie: everyone) as Three has announced that it has began selling all of its phones unlocked. This means that you won’t have to take your phone along to shifty hut on the high street to move your phone over to another network.

In a blog post on the Three website, the company’s Director of “Customer Strategy” is quoted as saying:

““We want our customers to have the best mobile experience. Unlocked phones give consumers a choice as to how to use what is on their handset. We’d rather focus on making the services we offer attractive and useful rather than limiting what our customers can do with their phones.”

The change, whilst welcome, won’t change a huge amount: Contract customers will still be locked into monthly contracts, and PAYG customers will still be paying big money for the latest handsets.

Of course, the losers in this will be the mobile phone unlocking shops. But I guess they can always go back to cutting keys, fixing shoes and selling fried chicken like they used to (its not just London that has these weird hybrid phone unlocking shops, right?).
