London Buses trialling free wifi

Transport for London has announced a trial of wifi on a handful of buses which, if successful, could roll out to thousands of other buses that serve the capital.

The technology has been installed on a bus on route 12, between Dulwich and Oxford Circus, and the RV1 which operates between Covent Garden and Tower Hill. The tech behind it is apparently supplied by BluePod media – and TfL will be looking for a sponsor to pay for it, if it goes further.

It’s perhaps a bit of a weird move, given that the benefit of bus travel is that you’ll be able to get mobile signal – unlike in the tube. But hey, it’ll be useful for any users who want to browse on their tablets instead, and to the millions of foreign tourists who come to the capital each year.

TfL also notes that this is the latest trial following testing of other technology – including better information screens – that we saw earlier this year.

If London is open to suggestions though, if Boris isn’t too busy running for Prime Minister how about sorting out the air conditioning on the much-trumpeted “new routemaster”.
