A decade after its launch, in a world currently dominated by humongous phablets and handy tablets, Sony has announced plans to discontinue the original PSP completely.

The console stopped shipping in North America back in January but has finally faced the reality of complete extinction. Shipments for the console end in Japan this month and will follow suit in Europe later this year.

Since its launch back in 2003, the PSP achieved sales of around 76 million as of two years ago. (Chances are, this hasn’t increased much since, following the launch of the PS Vita).

To mourn the console’s loss, we’re going to spend the evening having a quiet drink with some of it’s closest friends, lamenting together that the world never really did understand the ill-named “Universal Media Disc”.
