As Twitter continues to drive many users mad with paid-for “promoted” tweets, Mozilla is looking to join the commercial world with ads in its Firefox browser.

Sky News is reporting that Mozilla plans to introduce advertisements on the pages that appear when a user opens a new tab.

At the moment, when a Firefox user opens a new tab, a series of most-clicked sites are displayed.

In a blogpost called New Tab Experiments, Firefox vice president Johnathan Nightingale said that fresh installations of the browser could come with “a mix of our own sites and other useful sites” promoted.

“Sponsorship would be the next stage once we are confident that we can deliver user value,” he said.
