The Moto E (pictured) is priced at just £89 without a contract. It has a high-resolution 4.3-inch display with 256ppi, a 1980mAh battery, runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat, and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor with up to 1.4GHz dual-core CPUs.

The Moto E also has a 5MP rear-facing camera, a microSD slot for up to 32GB of expandable memory, and a built-in FM radio.

The new Moto E appears to be clearly aimed at firt-time smartphone buyers.

The upgraded version the Moto G now features 4G and a microSD card slo, and will retail for £149. The Moto G was launched in November last year for £130 in the UK, but was usually available for less than £100 from phone networks on pre-paid plans.

Motorola SVP of software engineering Steve Horowitz said: “With the Moto X and Moto G, we put Motorola back on the map – we now have over 17 percent of the pre-paid market in the UK.”

Both new Motorola phones look set to compete with EE’s new budget-priced Kestrel. EE claims it is the UK’s most affordable 4G smartphone, with prices starting at £99 on Pay As You Go.
