Facebook is reportedly working on a video-chat app, dubbed Slingshot, to rival the popular messaging service Snapchat.

A report at PC Pro says that the rumoured app has been in development for some months, and could be launched within the next two weeks.

In recent years, Facebook has come under pressure from simple messaging services such as Snapchat, which have taken users away from the social network.

Last year, Facebook tried ti buy Snapchat for $3 billion, but the offer was rejected. Instead Facebook bought the popular messaging service WhatsApp for $19 billion.

PC Pro says that Slingshot will most likely be a standalone app and will not be integrated into Facebook Messenger, “as part of [CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s] strategy of unbundling the group’s social network into standalone mobile services”.
