GTA V beats Call of Duty to become most successful UK game launch ever
They say that crime doesn’t pay, but try telling that to Take-Two, publishers of bank-robbing gangster sim Grand Theft Auto 5, which has just enjoyed the most successful UK game launch of all time.
Developed by Rockstar Games, GTA V was sold to 1.57 million happy PS3 and Xbox 360 gamers in its first 24 hours of being on sale following Tuesday’s midnight launch. That’s makes for a staggering £65m in sales, according to figures from Chart Tracks.
It’s a launch that trumps even gaming behemoth Call of Duty. The previous “most successful UK game launch ever” title holder, Call of Duty: Black Ops, sold 1.41 million units on day one, worth £58m.
Grand Theft Auto V’s UK success is mirrored across the globe too. Take-Two has also revealed the launch raked in $800m (£497m) around the world in the first 24 hours.
