sony-xperia-z-ultra-top.jpgSony’s long rumoured “phablet” the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, has officially been revealed today across two simultaneous events in Shanghai and London.

Sharing much in common with the already-available Sony Xperia Z (including its industrial design and waterproof credentials), it features an eye-catching 6.4-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) Triluminos display. Measuring 179.4 x 92.2 x 6.5mm and weighing just 212g, it wont be too noticeable a load in your pocket, despite its size.

As well as finger and digitiser pen input being accepted by the screen, Sony’s engineers have got one over Samsung’s Galaxy Note with the Xperia Z Ultra by also allowing standard pens and pencils to be used on the screen without damaging it. No more fumbling around for a tiny stylus – your entire stationary kit is safely compatible.

Under the hood sits a powerful Snapdragon 800 processor, a quad-core beast clocked at 2.2GHz. Despite the impressive spec list, Sony still boast an impressive battery life of 11 hours, aided by a sizeable 3000mAh battery pack.

An 8MP camera sits around the back, and includes shooting features such as a HDR mode, face detection and a burst shooting option. a 2MP front-facing camera also features.

4G connectivity is also onboard, alongside 16GB of internal storage which can be expanded by microSD cards.

Set to be available in black, white and purple, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra is set to be available from Q3 2013 across the globe. No word on pricing or carrier details yet, but it looks like Sony may be on to a winner here.
