skyrim-the-elders-scroll-arts.jpgWith numerous game of the year awards, critically acclaimed DLC packs, a thriving modding community and the accolade of having made a swords-and-sorcery RPG that’s become a mainstream cultural phenomenon under their belts, the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim team are finally moving on to pastures new.

The Bethesda Game Studios development team posted an emotional blog post today, announcing that, beyond a few “minor” game updates, their time with Skyrim is now complete:

“Skyrim has been a labor of love for us since we started designing it in 2006. We never imagined it would become the phenomenon it has. And that is because of you, the fans. It was all of you who made it a success. We can’t thank you enough for embracing the game, spreading the word, and making it your own.

“For the last year and a half we’ve been working on new content for Skyrim; from the game updates, Creation Kit, Steam Workshop, Kinect support, to DLCs. Parts of our team have also been in pre-production on our next major project, and that game is at the point where it requires the studio’s full attention to make it our biggest and best work yet.”

So what’s that “next major project” for the world-beating development team? With new console hardware looming over the horizon, you can bet your bottom dollar that an Elder Scrolls VI title is already in pre-production, though we’d imagine that’s a few years away yet. We can’t imagine the Bethesda team putting out their flagship brand first on a set of consoles they’re not yet experienced with.

So we’re gonna go with something which we consider even more exciting: the prospect of a Fallout 4 title. We loved Fallout 3 so, so much, and with the 2010 sequel New Vegas developed by Obsidian Entertainment, it’s been nearly 5 years since the Bethesda Game Studios team turned their attentions to a new post-apocalyptic title. As reported by Eurogamer, some loose-lipped voice actors from the series have already hinted that the series may be about to return. We’d welcome that next-gen announcement above pretty much anything revealed at the recent PS4 unveiling.
