polaroid-2013-ces-tablets.jpgAs well as revealing an inexpensive, Android-powered interchangeable lens compact camera in the shape of the iM1836 (which has made our Best in Show list), Polaroid also showed off a pair of Android tablets at CES 2013. Their secret weapons? Low, low pricing that could see them even rival the Google Nexus 7 for value.

The Polaroid M10 is the larger of the two tablets, measuring 10.1 inches. It’s got a good 1280 x 800 resolution, is powered by a quad-core Cortex A7 processor, features 1GB of RAM and comes complete with 16GB of storage. A 5MP camera sits on the rear and a 2MP front-facing camera is also onboard for capturing your ugly mug in all its low resolution glory. Android Jelly Bean is the OS of choice, but this has been re-skinned with Polaroid’s own tile-based UI which looks quite reminiscent of Windows 8.

The smaller tablet is the seven inch M7, again featuring a 1280 x 800 display for a higher PPI, but with a less powerful 1.6GHz A9 dual-core processor onboard. Jelly Bean is again re-skinned with Polaroid’s own UI, while under the hood sits 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. No rear camera on this one, but again a 2MP camera for video calling sits up front.

So then, the juicy part – price. Direct conversions from the US RRPs put the M10 at £150 and the M7 at just £85. Though pretty standard tablets on the specs front, that puts them in the same league price-wise as the Google Nexus and Kindle Fire HD. If they stand up under the scrutiny of an in-depth test, there could be new super-cheap tablet competition set to hit the market this Spring.
