TECH PENTATHLON: Five Of The Best Olympic Apps

Day three of the Tech Digest Tech Pentathlon! To celebrate the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games, we’ve been pulling together our top tech tips to help you get the most out of the games.

Official London 2012 Results App

The Olympic games are great, but there’s often so much going on at the same time it can be really difficult to keep up with who’s won what medal for what events. Staying on top of the results is a lot easier this time around thanks to the Official London 2012 Results App. It offers real-time updates on all the results, profiles on athletes taking part, as well as schedules and calendars. It’s available for Android, iOS and Windows Phone devices.

BBC Olympics App

The BBC have also launched an Olympics app, and it has the added bonus of being able to stream their televised coverage straight to your mobile device. It also pulls in daily news stories from their sites, as well as event schedules and results pages. It’s available for Android, iOS and BlackBerry devices.

Curly’s Pocket Guide to Sports

We’d say this one’s going to be pretty much invaluable during London 2012. With so many different sports on show, each with their own set of rules, you’ll be hard pressed to find anyone who knows exactly how all of them work. For 69p, the Curly’s Pocket Guide to Sports for iPhone and iPad will let you impress your mates as it has rules to loads of Olympic events inside, as well as plenty of excellent trivia facts. Tom Daley Dive 2012

Tom Daley has put his name to a new iPhone/iPad diving game called Tom Daley Dive 2012. A little like a swan-diving take on dance and rhythm games, you’ve go to land straight ten scores from the judges, using swipe and gesture controls to pivot and turn in mid-air before slipping into the pool below gracefully. Available for free on iPhones and iPads, additional dives can be bought for 69p through in-app purchases. You can snap it up here.

Fanatix

If you’re looking to get a bit more social during the games, check out free app Fanatix. It pulls in tweets relating to all the events, as well as highlighting key streams from top journalists and athletes, the app has been updated to add competitive point-scoring check-in system for those attending the games, photo streams from the games and a new interactive map so that you can feel part of the global Olympic community.
