ps3-toploader.jpgSony’s PlayStation 3 is going under the knife once more, with a third new model of the games console now looking almost certain to be revealed at Gamescom.

The new PS3, with the model number CEH-4011B, has been spotted in testing labs in Brazil. It looks set to ditch the disc tray slot in favour of an old-school mechanical lid on the top, much like the slim-line PlayStation 2 did.

The new PlayStation will land with three different models; one with 16GB of storage, one with 250GB and one with a sizeable 500GB hard drive.

With that entry-level model it looks as if Sony will be opting for flash memory, taking the same storage route that Microsoft did when they launched the slimmed-down 4GB Xbox 360 slim edition.

  • I very much doubt they will release a 16gb model as almost every ps3 games have large forced installs to hard drive before you can even play the game,, if they do release a 16gb model they should have a warning on the box that it will be next to useless unless you upgrade it immediately if you plan to play games.

The 360 does not require any installing to hard drive (Maybe 2 games) this is why 4GB is okay for a lot of people who do not use the internet for multiplayer..

As with all “newer” models Sony have taken things away not added new things so maybe it will be interesting to see if this has happened again, the Blu ray drive becoming a mechanical lid on the top is a good clue..
