minecraft.pngMinecraft, arguably the biggest indie-gaming success story of all time, has raked in $80 million (540 million Swedish krona) for developers Mojang, it has been revealed by the Financial Times.

Downloaded more than 25 million times in just 15 months with over 5 million premium, paid-for players, Mojang are now looking for new pastures in which to spend the earnings made by the blocky, world building game. And, according to Mojang chief executive Carl Manneh, the next route for the rising studio could be through a Hollywood-backed TV show.

“We’ve been approached by a number of high-profile Hollywood producers and asked to do TV shows,” Manneh told Gamespot.

“We may do that. It’s hard when you don’t have any experience and someone comes to throw these ideas around. We have so much to focus on with just the game development and growing the business. But if the right idea comes along and the right people that we’d want to work with, we’d say why not?”

Mojang’s fortunes are soon set to grow even further: as well as expanding to mobile platforms, the Minecraft craze is set to hit the Xbox Live Arcade on May 9th, with a new version of the game co-developed with 4J Studios landing on Microsoft’s console, boasting Kinect motion control support with the Xbox 360 peripheral.

  • Here’s an idea for an episode if Minecraft gets a TV show: Steve goes through a strange portal only to find his female counterpart, Stella.
