iPod-nano-recall.jpgBetter late than never? We’re hoping that’s the case for anyone that may have been affected by this latest product recall by Apple. The iPhone giants are asking customers who have a certain model of iPod Nano mp3 players to return the units, as a newly-found battery fault could lead to overheating and a risk of fire in the devices.

Product recalls aren’t all that unusual, but the difference here is that Apple are calling in 5-year old, first generation iPod Nanos, worldwide. Sold between Spetember 2005 and December 2006, Apple fans may have had ticking time-bombs sitting in their pockets for the best part of 5 years in some cases.

“Apple has determined that, in very rare cases, the battery in the iPod nano (1st generation) may overheat and pose a safety risk,” Apple stated.

“Affected iPod Nanos were sold between September 2005 and December 2006. This issue has been traced to a single battery supplier that produced batteries with a manufacturing defect. While the possibility of an incident is rare, the likelihood increases as the battery ages.”

Any users found to have a dodgy player will be issued a new iPod Nano within six weeks of returning their current ones, free of charge. However, the player sent out will remain a first generation edition, rather than the newer touchscreen models touted by Apple.
