LG’s Optimus 3D Android handset promised tons of 3D gaming goodness from its auto-stereoscopic display when it was first revealed at this years MWC event. However, it’s been a slow start for dedicated 3D content on the device. That looks all set to change though, with LG now stating that owners can expect 2D-to-3D gaming app convertor software to roll out to Optimus 3D handsets this month.

Working only specifically with Open GL based games (which thankfully the majority of Android games are built with), and only working in landscape orientation (which, again, the majority of smartphone games use as their default view) the software allows users to switch on the fly between 2D and 3D visuals.

The update will be an OTT one, so keep checking the Optimus 3D’s settings menu to see whether it’s hit your blower yet.

It may be the most exciting, but it’s not the only update headed to the handset. LG will also be bringing a 3D Video Editor, Dolby Mobile, 2D video stabilization and 2D viewing of 3D videos to the handset in the coming weeks.

Fair play to LG for continuing to support a handset that’s now getting a little long in the tooth.
