"3D-less" Nintendo 3DS Lite in the works?

Nintendo 3DS real.jpgWhat’s a Nintendo 3DS without the 3D bit? Er… a souped-up Nintendo DS console?

That’s a fairly accurate description we’d say, and one that doesn’t sound all that exciting in this new age of glasses-less 3D handhelds and mega-powerful PS Vitas.

But according to 01Net, a 3D-less Nintendo 3DS may be exactly what Ninty have tucked up their sleeves. They’re claiming a new redesigned version of the latest handheld on the block will “radically tone down” the 3D effect, as well as featuring an optional $10 second analog stick too.

The 3DS has struggled to sell all that well since its launch, though a recent massive price cut saw sales pick up a fair bit. 01Net are now suggesting that the price cut was to encourage a fire sale of sorts before this new version is revealed.

It all sounds a bit off. Sure, the Nintendo 3DS is having a bit of a hard time right now, but to considerably scale back what’s billed as its big USP seems ridiculous. It’s like Nintendo launching the Wii, then dropping motion-support.

However 01Net, the gaming blog that grabbed the scoop, were also the first guys to correctly nab the Wii U and PS Vita’s specs before those consoles were officially revealed, so it can’t be ruled out just yet. Certainly, the original Nintendo 3DS went through multiple redesigns, with its second-generation Nintendo DS Lite the most popular.

Are we looking at a Nintendo 3DS Lite? Is the removal of marmite-like 3D Nintendo’s drastic plan to save the 3DS?

  • I actually hope they do, even though it seems silly lol, going against their USP and changing it, seems a bit unusual but the 3DS is a bit of a failure at the moment, I hope they do because it will likely be cheaper then, I imagine? and personally I have 0% interest in the 3D parts, I just want the newer RPG games such as tales of the abyss which I will likely play without 3D so this is good news to me! Cheers for the info!

    ???
Have you actually played the 3DS at all? The 3D is just one function on it, the fact is the 3DS is more along the lines of a portable wii rather than a standard DS. The games are more akin to home console versions rather than handheld games and the 3DS packed many other functions not found in DS systems so out of the two systems the 3DS is less of a souped up DS and more of a portable wii home console.

    • Ya…

So the PS VIta is closer to a (PS3+Move) than the PSP? Graphics are just as great but to say it is a motion controled home console is just wrong.
