The online-PC-game-downloads-platform-war (phew!) takes an interesting turn this morning after some unexpected features have made themselves known on EA’s new Origin service.

According to PC Gamer, some game activiation keys nabbed through rival service Steam will work with Origin, including the likes of Battlefield Bad Company 2, Dragon Age Origins, Mass Effect 2, Dead Space 2, Alice: Madness Returns and Dragon Age 2. As such, anyone who has already bought these EA games through Steam will not need to repurchase them if, for whatever strange reason, they also wanted to play them through Origin too.

Likewise, Steam functions such as in-game overlays and UI mods and tweaks will be accessible through Origin too.

A small victory for games buyers then who may have worried about their EA game purchases through Steam, what with the advent of Origin, though you do have to wonder how that serves EA’s greater purpose. Unique DLC for these games through Origin perhaps?
