sony_ericsson_xperia_active.jpgWant a smartphone that’s not going to give up the ghost if it unexpectedly takes a plunge into a muddy puddle? Then take a look at the second of today’s trio of Sony Ericsson smartphones, the Xperia Active.

Holding its own under water for up to 90 seconds, its touchscreen can track fingers even if they’re wet, as well as protecting against dust in its crevices. There’s also a little clip on the underside of the phone, should you need your hands free for some hardcore rope-free rock climbing, or something of the like.

The Xperia Active also features a built-in GPS, barometer and compass, but the real treat comes in the shape of real-time heart rate and pulse monitoring technology. When comibned with the pre-installed iMapMyFitness app, the phone becomes a nifty personal training companion, keeping track of all your fitness routines and training progression.

Other, more standard features include a 3-inch 320 x 480 Reality Display, alongside the Mobile Bravia Engine that Sony Ericsson are squeezing into most of their handets these days. Android 2.3 is the OS of choice, while a HD video-capturing 5MP still camera sits on the rear. A 1GHz processor sits under the hood powering the show.

No word on pricing or release info yet, but we’ll keep you posted.
