In February, Android smartphones outsold the Apple iPhone for the first time on the Tesco Mobile network.

Before the holidays, the iPhone outsold Android phones by two to one, but this trend has now changed, says Tesco. The supermarket giant now predicts 2011 to be the Year of Android.

The announcement from Tesco Mobile follows on from analysis from research house Gartner, which shows that global Android sales in 2010 grew by nearly 900% from 2009. Gartner also reported that 67.2 million Android-based units were sold in 2010, accounting for 22.7% of the market. This is a 888.8% growth rate for Android in 2010, suggesting a strong trajectory into 2011.

“As one of the UK’s leading operators, these sales are a useful barometer for smartphone trends,” says Graham Harris, chief executive officer of Tesco Telecoms and Tesco Mobile. “We commend this healthy competition between operating systems as we see this as helping to drive consumer choice and flexibility.”

  • They have outsold the Apple iPhone because they are cheaper.. I do not see any other reason.

  • The masses are NOT stupid. And I’ve had 3 android handsets so far with no issues at all. I’m not an Apple or Android fanboy per se, they both have advantages/disadvantages. To imply that Android is faulty or problematic with no evidence or reason for the statement is just plain foolish.
